Matt Foot on Excessive Sentencing of Protesters

From today’s Evening Standard:

‘In the next few weeks a significant number of other student protesters of good character will be sentenced at the Crown Court for violent disorder.

This merciless approach follows the extraordinary vindictiveness shown following the Gaza protests in London in 2009, when 10 months after the demonstrations police decided to charge 70 young Muslims of good character with violent disorder. More than 60 of them pleaded guilty and went to prison while six of the seven who were tried were acquitted.’
